The Play-in Round results:
#4 Jr Bacon Cheeseburger defeats #5 DQ Chicken Fingers w/ gravy
#4 Filet-O-Fish defeats #5 Sonic Footlong Cheese Coney
#4 Big Buford defeats #5 KFC Bucket
#5 Italian BMT upsets #4 Sonic Burger
The play-in matchups have been completed and round one of the 2014 #MarchFatness bracket has been set. There wasn't as much drama as the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament had in its first weekend. Three of the higher-seeded teams from the play-in round advanced as expected, while the 5-seed Italian BMT from Subway was able to upset the 4-seed Sonic Burger to move into the first round where it has an unenviable matchup with the 1-seed Whopper.
While all the matchups are quite tasty, there are some very intriguing contests as well.
Starting at the top of the bracket, we have the number one overall seed McDouble from McDonald's going up against the 4-seed Jr Bacon Cheeseburger from Wendy's. Both of these sandwiches are staples on each restaurant's respective value menus. Can the Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger garner enough votes to pull of one of the biggest upsets in food history?
Moving to the bottom left part of the bracket, it's the highly debated chicken vs. fish matchup in another 4 against 1 pairing. Wendy's Spicy Chicken Sandwich is perhaps the most popular chicken sandwich in America, but the McDonald's Filet-o-Fish can definitely hold its own. Does it have enough year-round appeal to take down Spicy Chicken though, as these two entrees get together in the second matchup pitting these two powerhouse restaurants against each other?
If we go straight across the bracket to the bottom right, there's a matchup which might be considered the toughest one to call in all of #MarchFatness. It's a 2 vs. a 3. It's a chicken on chicken cockfight for the ages. These two sandwiches, the 2-seed Chick-Fil-A Chicken Sandwich and the 3-seed Burger King Original Chicken Sandwich, are classics on each of their home menus. Each has its own quirks whether it is the pickles of Chick-Fil-A or the long, hoagie shape of Burger King. Which sandwich will ultimately prevail in this seemingly even contest?
Last but certainly not least, we move to the upper right portion of the bracket. Again we take a look at a 1 vs. 4 matchup, but this one has a different feel. It's Wendy's Baconator facing the Rally's Big Buford, respectively. On the surface, Baconator is as tough a competitor as there could be. It's meat and bacon and cheese piled on top of more meat and bacon and cheese held together with a warm, toasty bun. Big Buford is a sleeper though; even a Cinderella, if you will. Big Buford also has the added storyline of feeling a bit slighted and underseeded. It was overlooked in the original field of 16, and only added when expansion to 20 foods was approved. Many fans of the Big Buford feel that it should have been in without a doubt the first time around, and probably should have been a fairly high seed. Is that enough for the Big Buford to survive and advance in an upset bid against a food giant like Baconator?
